Back in another life, I covered the professional golf tours for some of the major golf publications in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. For about 15 years, I chased legends of the game such as Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Norman and Faldo. As I was getting near the end of that decade and a half of golf coverage, Tiger Woods came on the scene. I was there when he won his first Masters in 1997.

Woods returned to competitive golf today by playing in the first round of his own event in Bethesda, Md. I took the day and covered his first tournament 18 holes after having back surgery three months ago.

His short game faltered a bit and he did not post a stellar score, but he seemed to hit the ball well overall. In a post-round press conference he said he had no pain.

Here are some of my favorites from the day:

  1. Thanks Ned. Always takes a minute to remember the timing to get the club in the position I want it to be in the photo, but after a few holes I am back on track. Fun to see some of the folks that are still out there from when I was covering it full time.
