It was a historic night. For the first time in over 50 years and only the fourth time ever, the National Spelling Bee has co-champions.

After exhausting the special 25-word championship list that is used when the field is down to the final two contestants, Ansun Sujoe, 13, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Sriram Hathwar, 14, of Painted Post, New York, were the only spellers left standing as the confetti fell around them.

To be honest, although it was cool to be a part of Spelling Bee history and a hearty congratulations to the winners, most of us (as photographers) were cheering for one of the other contestants.

Jacob Williamson, 15, of Cape Coral, Florida, was easily the most exciting speller to watch since he was certainly the most animated. If this kid got this excited when getting a word right, we could only imagine how he would have reacted if he had won. What photos HE would have made!

Of course there were other “moments” to be captured at the Bee…
