When I worked at the Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg, Virginia, one of my favorite things to cover was the Cole Bro’s Circus when it came to town. I would get up super early to photograph the tent raising on the morning of their arrival and then return as much as I could to see what I could find for interesting images.
I tended to shy away from performance photos as much as possible. I wanted to show the behind the scenes life of the performers and workers that the general public never gets to see.
I left the paper in 2010 and moved to Washington, D.C. The move actually made it easier to meet up with the circus since they have shows in many cities and towns that are close by and for the past five or six years, I have continued to work on the project. I have become friends with many of the workers and performers and they have permitted me to continue to peek into their lives.
The slideshow below has a selection of some of my favorite images from 2012.
